Child Safety Standards

Kioo is used by children aged roughly 6 to 13. This page sets out our standards for keeping them safe, published in line with Google Play's Child Safety Standards policy and our obligations under Ugandan and international law.

Zero tolerance

Kioo has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) in any form. We prohibit it absolutely, we build the product so it cannot be used to facilitate it, and we report it to the appropriate authorities.

1. How to report a concern

If something in Kioo worries you about a child's safety, tell us. You do not need to be sure, and you do not need an account.

Designated child-safety contact safety@kioo.site
In the app Tap the report control on any AI Tutor answer
Our response time Acknowledged within 24 hours; CSAE reports triaged immediately
Immediate danger Contact the Uganda Police Child and Family Protection Unit, or your local emergency services, first. Then tell us.

Reports are reviewed by a person. You can report anonymously, though leaving a contact address lets us ask a follow-up question if we need one.

2. Safe by design

The strongest child-safety measure in Kioo is what we chose not to build. There is no mechanism in the app for one user to reach another.

FeatureIn KiooWhy it matters
User-to-user messaging or chatNoneNo grooming surface
Public profiles, usernames or search for other usersNoneChildren cannot be discovered or targeted
Comments, forums or social feedsNoneNo user-generated content is published to anyone
Photo or video sharing between usersNoneHomework photos go only to the AI, never to another person
Friend lists, followers, leaderboards naming other childrenNoneNo social pressure, no contact vector
Location featuresNoneNo child's location is collected or shown
Third-party behavioural advertisingNoneNo profiling of children, no ad-network data flows
Links out to the open webNone from within lessonsNo unsupervised browsing

The only content a child can submit is a homework photograph, and it goes to an AI provider to produce an answer for that child alone. It is not published, not shared, and is deleted from our servers once the answer has been generated.

3. Our CSAE standards

We prohibit, and act against, all of the following:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in any form.
  • Any attempt to use Kioo to produce, request, describe or obtain sexualised content involving a minor — including via the AI Tutor.
  • Grooming, sextortion, solicitation, or any attempt to make contact with a child.
  • Trafficking, or the advertisement or facilitation of child exploitation.
  • Sexualisation of minors in text, imagery or generated output.

What we do about it

  1. Prevent. Automated safety filtering on images and text submitted to the AI Tutor, before they reach a model. Our AI providers apply their own CSAE detection and refusal on top of ours.
  2. Detect. Prompts that attempt to elicit sexualised content involving minors are refused and flagged.
  3. Act. Accounts used for CSAE-related activity are suspended immediately and permanently, without warning.
  4. Report. We report apparent CSAM and credible child-exploitation concerns to the appropriate authorities — including, where applicable, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Uganda Police Force — and preserve the relevant evidence as the law requires.
  5. Cooperate. We respond to lawful requests from law-enforcement and child-protection agencies investigating child exploitation.
  6. Learn. Every substantiated report is reviewed for what allowed it, and the finding is fed back into our filters, prompts and product decisions.

4. The AI Tutor and child safety

A generative AI in a children's app is the part that needs the most care. Our controls:

  • System prompts confine the tutor strictly to primary-school academic subjects.
  • It refuses sexual, violent, hateful, self-harm and extremist content, and refuses to role-play as a person, a friend or a confidant.
  • Images and text are filtered before a model sees them.
  • Every answer is labelled AI-generated and carries a report control.
  • Reported responses are reviewed by a human being.
  • Where a safety failure is systematic, we take the affected path offline until it is fixed.

The full detail — including what the AI gets wrong — is in our Responsible AI policy.

5. Age-appropriate design

We follow the principles of the UK Age Appropriate Design Code and Google Play's Families policy:

  • Data minimisation. We collect a display name, an email, and learning activity. A phone number is optional. Nothing else.
  • No persistent advertising identifiers and no advertising profiles.
  • No dark patterns. No countdown timers, no fake scarcity, no nagging to upgrade, no loot-box mechanics, no manufactured guilt for breaking a streak.
  • Parental oversight. A parent or guardian can link to a child's account, see the learning activity, control payment, and request deletion.
  • High-privacy defaults. There is nothing to make public, because nothing about a child is ever public.
  • Honest commercial framing. Paid features are clearly marked. Children cannot buy anything inside the app — purchases happen on the web and are intended for adults.
  • Clear language. We write our policies to be readable by the parents who need them.

6. Parents and guardians

Children under 18 should use Kioo with a parent or guardian's knowledge. A linked parent can review learning activity, manage payment, and request deletion of the child's account and data at any time. See the parents' guide and the deletion page.

If a child's account was created without a parent's involvement, email privacy@kioo.site and we will delete it, without argument.

We work to comply with:

  • The Ugandan Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019
  • The Ugandan Children (Amendment) Act and Computer Misuse Act as they relate to child protection
  • The US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), where applicable
  • Google Play's Child Safety Standards, Families and Developer Programme policies
  • Applicable CSAM reporting obligations in the jurisdictions where we operate

8. Governance

  • A named member of the Kioo team holds responsibility for child safety and monitors safety@kioo.site.
  • These standards are reviewed at least annually, and whenever we add a feature that changes what a child can send or see.
  • Anyone at Kioo can escalate a child-safety concern directly, without going through a manager.
  • New features are assessed for child-safety impact before release. Anything that would create a contact surface between users gets an explicit decision, not a default.
